2024 Advancing Earth Observation Forum

10 – 12 September 2024
Note: Pre and post Forum workshops will take place on 9 & 13 September, on either side of the Forum.

ABOUT

The 2024 Advancing Earth Observation Forum will be held from 10 – 12 September 2024 in Adelaide, South Australia at the Adelaide Convention Centre. Pre and post Forum workshops will take place on 9 & 13 September, on either side of the Forum.

The biennial Advancing Earth Observation Forum was created to enable the Earth observation (EO) community to communicate, coordinate, collaborate and collectively assess the state of EO in the Australian and Asia-Pacific region.

The Advancing Earth Observation Forum will discuss advancements in remote sensing technology, sensors and platforms, data analysis, and applications related to EO. It is a platform where experts share insights on how these data can be utilised for wide-ranging purposes such as climate and environmental monitoring, agriculture and forestry, urban planning, weather prediction and disaster management. This forum will focus on emerging applications and technologies and their potential impacts on society, the economy and on our understanding of the environment we inhabit.

Participation is anticipated from a range of organisations within the EO community, made up of a diverse range of people from industry, government, research, space, defence, not-for-profits, and educational institutions.

THEME

Comprehensive and sustained Earth observations are critical to building a sustainable future for Australia under a warming and more dynamic climate and enable the caring and responsible stewardship of our shared future. As such, the organising committee is looking for presentations that highlight the Forum’s overarching theme EO for Australia’s changing future.

The AEO24 Forum will cover:

  • Current and future missions of relevance to Australia
  • EO supporting agriculture, forestry, and environmental science and management
  • EO supporting climate adaptation and mitigation
  • EO supporting disaster preparedness and recovery
  • EO supporting the transition to a sustainable future
  • Application of data assimilation, machine learning and artificial intelligence

To assist with scheduling and program filtering, please choose one sub-theme appropriate to your abstract from the list below:

  • New and upcoming missions
  • Kanyini, the South Australian space services mission
  • Water Resources and Climate
  • Multi-sensor approaches and data assimilation
  • Artificial Intelligence applications
  • Calibration and Validation - expanding techniques and applications
  • Applications of Synthetic Aperture Radar
  • Dynamic Coasts: see beyond the shoreline
  • Applications of the Open Data Cube
  • EO in the Pacific including the Pacific Data Cube

Please select 'other' if none of the above sub-themes match your abstract.

PRESENTATION TYPES

There will be a variety of presentation formats and lengths. The organising committee welcomes program proposals in formats such as:

  • Individual presentation – 20 minutes (including question time)

Individual presentations will be grouped by the programming committee into thematically related areas and presented in concurrent sessions. Each presenter will be given 15 minutes to share their work and 5 minutes for Q&A, for a total of 20 minutes. Abstracts submitted for consideration as an individual presentation will be considered for lightning talks or poster displays if not accepted for the individual presentation format.

  • Lightning talk – 5 minutes (question time will take place at the conclusion of all lightning talks in the session)

Lightning talks will be presented during dedicated concurrent sessions during the Forum. Each lightning talk will be 5 minutes long with a 1 minute changeover (to allow for the introduction of the next speaker). Lightning talks will be presented in 60 minute blocks of 10 talks (max) followed by a 30 minute question/discussion period during which all presenters will be available for discussion with members of the audience. There is no limit to the number of slides you can use, only the presentation time.

  • Workshop – half day (3 hours) or full day (6 hours with 1 hour lunch break) options will be held on either Monday, 9 September 2024 (pre-Forum) or on Friday, 13 September 2024 (post-Forum).

Workshops should be interactive with an aim to foster collaboration and knowledge sharing between participants. Workshops should be structured to ensure that goals of the workshop can be realistically achieved in a 3-hour or 6-hour period. As the Workshop Organiser you can utilise the 3-hour or 6-hour period in many different ways, and you are responsible for coordinating the timing of the workshop. Workshop Organisers should act as leadership for the session, guiding participants through activities, and also coordinating PowerPoints if needed, seating and table arrangements, timing, and facilitating the kind of participant involvement you would like.

  • Poster presentation – A0-sized poster to be displayed in the exhibition hall for the duration of the Forum.

Posters will be displayed in a poster gallery in the exhibition hall at the venue. Delegates will be encouraged to visit the poster gallery and interact with presenters.
